Fortunately, Brothers is here to help! This month, we answer our customers’ most frequently asked questions regarding HVAC and plumbing.

Common Homeowner Questions—and Solutions

Whether you're new to homeownership or a seasoned pro, it makes no difference. Everyone has home-related questions at some point. Here are our top 10.

What are some signs I need a drain cleaning?

Signs that you need drain cleaning are often obvious. Slow-moving drains, strange odors, gurgling, or water back-up are some of the most common. If you're experiencing these issues, call our team to schedule a drain cleaning service. We'll have you back in action quickly!

What's the difference between a heat pump and a traditional HVAC system?

This is a great question! A heat pump can both heat and cool a home, whereas a traditional HVAC system relies on separate components for heating and cooling.

Is it okay to use chemical drain cleaners for tough clogs?

We recommend against using chemical drain cleaners. While they may offer a “quick fix,” they can damage your pipes in the long run. Instead, try this trick to treat a clog: Pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by a half cup of vinegar. (The solution will fizz and help loosen debris.) Let it sit for about 30 minutes, then flush it with hot water. Repeat if necessary.

Should I close air vents in unused rooms?

Closing vents will likely not save you money or energy. Your heating and cooling system will produce the same amount of air regardless of whether the vents are open or closed. It’s safer to keep all vents open since closing them may damage your system.

What's the best location for an HVAC thermostat in my home?

Thermostats should be placed on interior walls far away from direct sunlight. If not, your temperature readings could be inaccurate.

Why is my water heater making noise?

If your water heater is grumbling or popping, it is often the result of sediment buildup in the tank. Call the team at Brothers for professional hot water heater maintenance. We'll do a clean flush!

How can I help prevent frozen pipes in the winter?

Here are a few things to try:

  • Open cabinets to let warm air circulate.
  • Drip the faucets in rooms with exterior walls.
  • Turn off drain and irrigation systems.
  • Cover outdoor hose bibs.
  • Keep garage doors closed if pipes run through the space.

What size HVAC system do I need for my home?

Bigger is not always better when it comes to HVAC systems. The most efficient way to determine HVAC system capacity will depend upon what type of heating or cooling you prefer and the square footage of your home. Our pros can evaluate your current system and recommend the proper type and fit. Call us!

Why does my HVAC system smell musty or like mildew?

If your AC smells musty, it's generally caused by an accumulation of water in the drain line and drainage system. This common drain line problem can cause mildew, mold, and fungus growth. Dirty air filters could be another possible cause. Questions? Call Brothers for HVAC service, and we'll solve the issue!

What is a SEER rating?

SEER stands for seasonal energy efficiency rating and measures the energy efficiency of your air conditioning. The higher the SEER number, the more efficient the system will be.
