Protect Your Home from Storm Damage with These Tips
October 04, 2024
Hurricane Debby certainly did some damage last month. And stormy weather is still in the forecast for the next few months. As temperatures change and hurricane season continues, it is more important than ever to prepare and practice pre- and post-storm safety tips.
Is your family ready to fight the elements? Aside from scheduling regular HVAC maintenance, here are some additional things to keep in mind as hurricane season continues through November 30.
How to Protect Your Home and Family
The Boy Scouts of America will be the first to remind you to “be prepared.” Preparation prior to any storm is critical, but it’s especially smart when you live in hurricane territory. Here’s how to plan.
Before a Storm…
- Create a survival kit: The American Red Cross recommends creating a kit with supplies such as one gallon of water, flashlights, batteries, a battery-powered radio, your medications, a cell phone with chargers, family contact information, blankets, personal documents, extra cash, and personal hygiene items.
- Have a plan: Devise an evacuation plan that everyone in your family is familiar with and knows how to follow. Don’t forget to include plans for pets.
- Consider surge protection: Invest in surge protection for your home to safeguard against electrical damage during a storm.
- Invest in a generator: Power outages can be detrimental, especially for elderly family members. A generator can help save lives.
After the Storm…
- Do a Visual Inspection: Once it is safe, visually inspect your home, including the roof, exterior, lower levels, electrical system, and plumbing.
- Check for Electrical Damage: Inspect your circuit breaker panel for any tripped breakers and look for burnt wires or non-functioning appliances. Call an electrician if you have any concerns.
- Test Your HVAC System: Turn on the AC or heat to ensure everything works properly. If not, schedule an HVAC inspection.
- Don’t Go Near Downed Wires: Avoid downed wires, especially if they are near water. Report them to the power company.
Protection from Future Storms…
- Install surge protections: If you suffered electrical damage during a storm, invest in surge protection to prevent future issues.
- Use protective covers on outside units: Protective covers during storms can safeguard your HVAC equipment.
- Tie down furniture or take it indoors: Use bungee cords or rope to secure outdoor furniture and other items or bring them indoors to prevent damage.
